  • Beskrivelse: The respectable Nikos Paganis is a trustee at the Holy Church of Saint Apostles. He feels that his hunchback brother, Markos, is a loafer because he doesn’t work and spends most of his time philosophizing and talking in riddles. His opinion is shared by both his widowed mother, Liza, and his niece, Sofia, who refers to the hunchback as “the buffoon”. Nikos is hoping to arrange his daughter’s engagement to a colleague named Thanos, offering his paternal home as a dowry. He tries to embezzle Markos’s share and pilfers money from the church. The newly arrived priest, Father Timotheos, discovers the theft, and Thanos, fearing for his reputation, leaves Sofia. Liza tries to convince a highly placed judge, an ex-lover of hers and Markos’ real father, to help Nikos, but he refuses. Markos, however, secretly helps his brother, who then not only fails to acknowledge his help, but kicks him out of the house in accordance with their mother’s wishes. The embittered Markos commits suicide, and the ingrate Nikos is arrested by the police and charged with fraud.
